#1–The Book Barn

book barn

The Book Barn is that happens when the Renaissance Fair meets a used book store. I’m guessing what happened is the book store bought a small family farm, filled the barn with used books from the basement to the rafters.  Then, when they had too many books for an entire barn, they built out buildings and set up tents to hold the over flow.

Hand painted, made on location signs lead patrons to the books of their choice.  The signs may be clever, snarky, fun, or witty.  They help to make the store–which is the entire farm, really–a destination.  In addition to books, The Book Barn has a small pirate ship, a playhouse complete with a pet cemetery, riding toys, chess games, and a sheep.

Book barn--mark twains printing press

The Book Barn got ahold of what is believed to be a printing press used to print one of Mark Twain’s books.

If you find yourself driving up or down I-95, take one of the East Lyme exists and set your GPS for The Book Barn.  If the ambiance isn’t enough reason for you to make the stop, then lets talk money.  We walked away with, if I remember correctly, 5 hard back books and 4 soft cover books.  The total was less than $30.
